Scenario:
You are a Product designer at The Health and Safety Executive.Your team is making a big push to improve the user experience of the website. Along with performing usability testing with users, your design lead would like to analyse the site in-house.
Task:
Perform a heuristic evaluation, drawing on usability principles and best practice, on the below webform. Present the findings, including specific problems and recommendations.
Evaluation Goal & The User:
Before starting the heuristic evaluation I had to take a couple of things into consideration. One of them being the goal of the evaluation which was to find usability issues that may hinder the user in completing the web form. Which brought up the question of who the user was, in this case the user would be a manager or someone in a senior position with a heavy workload and limited time to complete the form. Another thing to keep in mind with this user was the stress and pressure that also accompanied their role.
THE EVALUATION:
Before starting I also had to set out which heuristics I would use and a severity scale, for this task I used Jakob Neilsen's 10 Usability Heuristics and marked each violation on a severity scale of 0 (not a usability issue) to 4 (a severe usability issue). For each of the 10 heuristics I made a list of violations and recommendations, including screenshots of each violation and also summarising my findings in a table.
